Hold Up at Exeter Creek
Hold Up at Exeter Creek

The Old West has long been the setting for fictional stories of outlaws, guns, fleet horses and romance. Sometimes the stories that are true are more intriguing than the fiction.

Just west of Malta, Montana on a hot July afternoon of 1901, one of the most successful train robberies in history was recorded. Harvey Logan, alias "Kid Curry," and the rest of the Wild Bunch made off with over $41,000.00 in unsigned banknotes. Their robberies were trademarked by using explosives to blow up the safes of trains. This scene depicts the moment of impact when the safe on the express car explodes on the Great Northern No. 3 Flyer. As preplanned, the train was stopped at gunpoint as it neared the bridge at Exeter Creek. The getaway was made with guns blazing and dust flying as the gang rides south.

This first in a series of train robbery pictures by Jim Jordan shows his long-time interest in trains and also of the Old West. This has been a natural marriage of history and outlaw romance which remains with us today.
