The gracious Victorian style depot in Hamlet, North Carolina was built at the turn of the last century.  During the past 100 years this unique building has been a major passenger stop on east-west and north-south rail lines.  In the 1930's, the Seaboard Air Lines entered the diesel age and the modern world of railroading.  The "Orange Blossom Special" was the first of the E4 diesel-electric locomotives that boasted the citrus colors of yellow, dark green and orange.  This wintry scene depicts a busy stopover during the war years of the 40's with poignant holiday farewells between soldiers and their loved ones.  But, the Hamlet depot remembers the happy times, too, hosting family reunions, as a cheerful respite for weary travelers, and as a favorite "chat room" for the locals.
